Mandolin Craft
Welcome to the home page of Newson Stringed Instruments! Since
1980 I have been building stringed instruments out of my shop in
Northern Michigan. Whether you are looking for a Mandolin or Mandola
that responds to the lightest touch with an expansive, harmonic-rich
tone, or an instrument with a more robust character featuring stronger
fundamentals and mid-tones, I can build it for you.
It is my desire, with this website, to offer an informative glimpse
of the Mandolins I build here for the benefit of players seeking
a better instrument. In these pages you can see photos of the various
models of the Mandolin family that I produce with their features
detailed as well as pricing and ordering guidelines.
I would also like to show a little bit about the process; how I
build my Mandolins. I was originally trained as a Violin-maker so
my building technique might be a little different from other Mandolin
builders. I have observed that Mandolin players are not the only
ones interested in how their instruments are crafted. Indeed, most
people seem genuinely curious about the materials and ingenuity
used to produce a fine musical instrument.
So feel free to peruse the pages using the index on the right.
In the Gallery of instruments you will find a thumbnail index of
the models I offer. Clicking on them will bring up many captioned
images of my instruments as well as pricing. You will also find
a virtual tour of my workshop and see some of the materials and
processes used in the making of a Newson mandolin.
The Shop-Talk pages have been created in blog form to allow for
an expanding archive of thoughts and essays about Mandolins or any
other topic that drives me to put fingers to keyboard. So check
back regularly.
Thanks, Paul Newson
